At-home Tips for Dry Skin

by Barbara Ann Laroche

We all hate when our skin is not as we would like it to be. Having dry skin is actually a condition that is not rare at all. There are many factors that can cause dryness, such as cold weather, bathing excessively with harsh soaps, using cosmetic products that are not good for our skin, too much sun or wind exposure, or medical conditions such as dermatitis. Dry skin is characterized by having a low level of sebum and not being able to retain moisture and if no products are used to moisturize it, it feels tight and rough. We will look into some home made recipes to give you a couple of ideas, in case you cannot purchase those expensive creams that are sold in stores

Essential oils work very well when applied over dry skin. Some of the oils that you can use are rose hip oil, lavender oil, chamomile, and Sandalwood oil. For example, rose hip oil is very rich in vitamin A and vitamin C, and both are very good for the skin. It is also used to heal scarring and lessen the appearance of photo aging.

To drink lots of water is a must-do. Otherwise, no matter what you apply on your skin, you will never really solve the problem. Another idea is for you to mix in a blender 1/2 a cup of baking soda, 1 cup of oatmeal, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract and 1 cup of warm water. Pour this paste under the water that runs to fill the tub. You will feel the difference.

Other Options to Fight Dry Skin

Cucumbers are also very good for the skin and making a preparation with it will also help. After you apply the mix, you have to wait 10 minutes before you wash it off. Repeat at least one more time during the week and you will see the excellent results you will get. Two very effective recipes, even though they might not sound very appealing, are to apply mayonnaise mixed with baby oil in a ratio of 2 to 1 (tablespoons) on your most affected areas and also to apply a thick layer of Vaseline on your skin. In both procedures you have to leave the mixtures on your skin for 20 minutes and then rinse off with warm water.

If you are not as affected by dryness of the skin as others are, we still have some advice for you: try not to shower with very warm water, use a good factor of sun block when you are exposed to the sun, and have plenty of water during the day. Additionally, use a dry skin balm or any other hydrating lotion.

Dry skin is a problem that affects many people all over the world. If this is not taken care of, it can lead to conditions such as eczema. Using natural skin products can help your skin without the risk of second side effects.
