Types of Acne Scars
Exist two forms of acne scars characterized by tissue response to infection:
(1) Scars develop by additional tissue formation, and
(2) Scars caused by decrease of tissue.
Scars Caused by Increased Tissue Formation.
The blemishes generated by increased tissue formation are identified as keloids. Keloid scars are associated with high concentrations of the cell substance collagen. Overproduction of collagen is a consequence of skin cells to injury. The excess collagen becomes piled up in fibrous masses, resultant in a characteristic solid, smooth, usually irregularly-shaped scar.
The normal keloid scar is 1 to 2 millimeters in diameter, but a few may be 1 centimeter or larger. This abnormal growth of scar tissue is more normal to take place in susceptible people, who often are people with relatives who experience similar types of scars.
Keloid scars persist for years, however are able to decrease in size over time.
Scars Caused by Loss of Tissue
Acne scars associated with decrease of tissue-similar to scars that result from chicken pox-are more common than keloids. Scars associated with reduction of tissue are:
Ice-pick scars normally take place on the cheek. They are typically small, with a slightly jagged edge and steep sides-similar to wounds from an ice pick. Ice-pick scars can be superficial or deep, and could be hard or soft to the touch. Soft scars can be corrected by stretching the dermis; hard ice-pick scars cannot be stretched out.
Depressed fibrotic scars are commonly quite large, with sharp borders and steep sides. The base of these types of scars is firm to the touch. Ice-pick scars might evolve into depressed fibrotic scars over time.
Soft scars, shallow or deep are soft to the touch. They have gently sloping rolled edges that combine with normal skin. They are usually small, and either circular or linear in shape.
Atrophic macules are usually quite small when they arise on the face, but can be a centimeter or larger on the body. They are soft, usually with a lightly wrinkled base, and may be bluish in appearance due to blood vessels lying just under the scar. Over time, these scars vary from bluish to ivory white in color in white-skinned people, and develop into much less noticeable.
Follicular macular atrophy is more usual to appear on the chest or back of a person with acne. These might be small, white, soft lesions, often barely raised above the surface of the skin-something similar to whiteheads that didn't fully develop. This condition is sometimes also identified as "perifollicular elastolysis." The lesions can remain for months to years.

The intention of scar treatment is to provide the skin a more adequate physical aspect. Entire restoration of the skin, to the way it looked before you experienced acne, is often not usual, but scar treatment does usually recover the aspect of your skin.
